Ecocide refers to serious, widespread, or long-term damage to the environment and has been at the center of an international debate in recent years regarding its treatment as a standalone criminal offense. In light of the upcoming transposition of Directive (EU) 2024/1203 into criminal law, the discussion will cover recent international and European developments, as well as the issues arising from its incorporation into the Greek legal system.

This interactive dialogue aims to highlight the role of local and regional government in preventing, criminalising and responding to severe environmental destruction (ecocide). It is the aim of this session to platform the perspectives and expertise of both organisations working at the intersection of local governance, climate justice and conflict prevention, as well as political representation, with first-hand knowledge of the impact of environmental destruction and international law.

As part of the celebration of World Environment Day this June, Burundian civil society, through the Initiative des Jeunes pour le Climat et le Développement (IJCD), is organizing a series of three webinars dedicated to the Stop Ecocide campaign. This initiative aims to help young people and local communities better understand the concept of ecocide, the progress achieved by the campaign across Africa, and the critical role that Burundian and African youth can play in advancing this cause.

El Encuentro Anual de la Red de Clínicas Jurídicas Ambientales de América Latina y el Caribe, que se realizará en Santiago de Chile del 5 al 8 de mayo de 2026, constituye uno de los espacios académicos y de práctica jurídica más relevantes de la región para el análisis de conflictos socioambientales, litigación estratégica y formación jurídica universitaria con enfoque territorial. Youth for Ecocide Law (Y4EL) représente la voix des jeunes au sein du mouvement mondial visant à ériger l'écocide en cinquième crime international relevant de la Cour pénale internationale. Créé en 2021, Y4EL est né d'une frustration croissante parmi les jeunes du monde entier face à l'absence d'actions concrètes pour répondre aux crises climatiques et de biodiversité, et appelle à des garanties juridiques fortes pour responsabiliser les décideurs face aux dommages environnementaux graves et durables.

The Earth Co-Existence Initiative (ECI) and Youth for Ecocide Law will co-host an international webinar on 22 April 2026 to explore ecocide law and youth-led advocacy for its recognition in Zimbabwe. Dr Angela Sherwood (Queen Mary University of London) - Specialist in international law and human rights, Dr Sherwood will focus on how legal frameworks can protect activists and environmental defenders, ensuring those on the frontlines of climate justice are safeguarded.

This two-day workshop examines legal strategies to implement sustainability, confront the climate crisis, and pursue justice on a burning planet. We focus on two approaches: pushing the boundaries of existing law through innovative interpretations, as seen in the global rise of climate litigation, and renewing the law by crafting new legal concepts, such as the campaign to recognize ecocide as an international crime.

On 23 July 2025, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its Advisory Opinion on States' obligations concerning climate change. Requested through a UN General Assembly resolution led by Vanuatu and other States, this Opinion is a milestone in clarifying governments' legal duties to prevent and redress climate harm. This development follows the Advisory Opinion of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) in July 2025, which recognised the climate emergency as a human rights crisis and affirmed environmental protection as a *jus cogens* norm.

"Ecocide, defined as the large-scale destruction of ecosystems, is being considered as a potential international crime. This session brings together experts from Stop Ecocide International, Ecocide Law Alliance, Global Witness, and World-Check Research to examine how environmental harm intersects with financial crime, conflict, and compliance. We will review the proposed legal definition of ecocide, assess its global momentum, and discuss how financial institutions, investigative journalism, and civil society can collaborate to address environmental risks."

This youth-led discussion showcases "Ecocide in Our Eyes", an artbook by Youth for Ecocide Law bringing together youth artists and advocates who use creative expression to advance ecocide law, environmental justice and the rights of nature as instruments for climate and environmental justice. The session features an exchange between legal and creative perspectives, including a focus on how the ecocide law, the advisory opinion and climate change and rights of nature movements are shaping biodiversity protection, Indigenous rights, and environmental accountability with a focus on Latin America.

This event will explore how the emerging law of ecocide and development of rights of nature, supported by the recent Advisory Opinions on climate change, can help protect biodiversity & its Indigenous guardians. Africa is grappling with grave environmental crises of various scales and dimensions. The crises involve, among others, disproportionate and severe impacts from climate change, desertification and loss of biodiversity. Furthermore, widespread pollution and despoilation are stemming from development activities, particularly those linked to transnational companies and extractive industries. Studies have shown that the operations of large companies, particularly in the extractives sector, have huge potential for environmental impact.

For the first time since the 1980s, German environmental criminal law is set to be reformed, this time within the EU framework and with a major impact on international law. This is a historic opportunity for nature conservation and climate protection that we should not miss! Specifically, the EU Directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law must be transposed into national criminal law. Criminal law is closely linked to social values and ideas of right and wrong. This squandering of natural heritage benefits powerful interests that act with impunity, thanks to corruption and the absence of binding laws. This webinar analyses the mechanisms of this impunity and explores solutions to end it and protect our common heritage.

This session will discuss a gap in the International Criminal Court's subject matter jurisdiction – its inability to investigate and prosecute those who knowingly cause widespread or long-term damage to the environment – and the movement by civil society to amend the Rome Statute to address that gap. Our panel of experts will provide insights into the legal framework of international environmental criminal, corporate and state liability, and procedural steps required to integrate ecocide into existing international law.

Plastic pollution is one of the most visible and harmful environmental challenges of our time. Despite growing international awareness and emerging treaties such as the proposed Global Plastics Treaty, progress is hampered by weak enforcement mechanisms and the absence of legal accountability for large-scale environmental harm. This session will explore how the recognition of ecocide as an international crime can provide a powerful legal framework to support anti-plastics policies, treaties, and global reduction efforts.

Against the backdrop of global ecological crisis, this two-day workshop examines the growing significance of ecocide in contemporary global politics. With momentum building for an ecocide amendment to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court—led by nations such as Vanuatu, Samoa, Fiji, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—and with the European Union now requiring member states to criminalise offences "comparable to ecocide" under its revised Environmental Crime Directive, the case for prosecuting the most serious environmental harms is rapidly gaining international legitimacy. This panel will explore how ecocide law—designed to hold the most powerful in society accountable—can support workers and communities by reducing exposure to harmful practices, establishing mechanisms for criminal redress when environmental harm occurs, levelling the playing field for sustainable industries, fostering long-term green job security, and securing Scotland's position as a global leader in advancing legal protections for the natural world—and for all of us who depend on it for our livelihoods and wellbeing.

In September 2024, Vanuatu, Fiji & Samoa formally submitted a proposed amendment to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Once accepted, it will create a new international crime of ecocide to protect our environment from the worst & most serious harms. What is the new law & what are the transformational opportunities & challenges for UK businesses, finance, farming and for our rivers & seas? How can business adapt to take advantage of the changes it will usher in?

This panel will be moderated by The Economist's Vijay Vaitheeswaran and an environmental activist Bella Lack, representing the young generation. Ecocide law—a legal framework that prevents and criminalises severe environmental harm—offers a transformative pathway to justice. Recognising ecocide as a crime would enhance protections for both the people and the environment of Southern Africa, while promoting legal accountability at national and regional levels.

Watching the devastation wrought on our food systems and landscapes can feel overwhelming. How can we push for meaningful change on a global scale? One promising solution gaining momentum is ecocide as an international criminal law. In September 2024, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa, formally proposed an ecocide amendment to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court signalling a historic step toward holding environmental destruction accountable.

This Workshop, hosted jointly by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Stop Ecocide International, will explore recent events internationally and nationally concerning ecocide legislation. It has two main components. One focuses on exploring developments nationally regarding ecocide legislation, specifically the opportunity of legislating ecocide as an autonomous crime in Spain in the transposition of the EU Directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law passed in spring 2024.

OFFICIAL SIDE EVENT, 23rd Session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: A Fifth Crime of Ecocide: Opening Considerations. Legal recognition of 'ecocide' continues to advance, with national crimes proposed around the world; an EU directive requiring member states to criminalise "conduct comparable to ecocide"; and increasing acknowledgement that severe environmental harm should stand among "the most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole". Environmental crime plays a central and under-acknowledged role in both armed conflict and the climate crisis, affecting development, peace and security and human rights.

The global youth movement is intensifying its efforts to have ecocide recognized as an international crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Currently, 37 countries are deliberating ecocide legislation at various government levels, and in 2023, specific bills have been introduced or advanced in Belgium, the Netherlands, Scotland, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Italy, and Spain (Catalunya). By 2024, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa have formally proposed ecocide as a crime under the ICC, advocating for its recognition alongside genocide and war crimes. Simultaneously, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will begin hearings in December for its much-anticipated Advisory Opinion on Climate Change, following a youth-led initiative. Together, these efforts underscore the critical role of youth as advocates and leaders in global environmental justice, yet youth voices remain underrepresented in formal COP decision-making processes. This debrief will spotlight young leaders worldwide and their solutions for building a sustainable, just future.

The African continent faces a myriad of environmental challenges, from deforestation and habitat destruction to pollution and climate change impacts. Despite numerous efforts to mitigate these issues, environmental crimes continue to pose significant threats to biodiversity, ecosystems, and human well-being.

"By focusing on its potential to mitigate environmental destruction and engage cross-sector collaboration, an international ecocide law would serve as a tool for advancing climate ambition. In 2022, Faith Voices for Ecocide Law, a volume of remarkable essays by faith leaders and indigenous wisdom keepers was published. The contributors examined the role of the natural world within their faith tradition and the necessary response to the huge damage humanity is causing. In September 2024, the Republic of Vanuatu. Fiji and Samoa submitted a proposal for a new international crime of ecocide for consideration by the members of the International Criminal Court, bringing closer the prospect of a powerful and effective deterrent to those behind the worst acts of environmental destruction.

The documentary 'In the Andean Amazonian Putumayo: Copper or Life' (40') will be screened, followed by a talk by the speakers and a participatory open dialogue. The Andean Amazonian Putumayo, one of South America's greatest natural treasures, is under threat if its mountains are opened up for intensive copper mining.

COP16 official side event: Ecocide: Bills in Latin America. The event will be in Spanish and will have simultaneous online translation into English. There will be simultaneous online broadcasting and recording of the event. In this discussion, laws and draft laws that exist in Latin America will be discussed. Experts will explain how the legislative process has been in their respective countries, what opportunities and obstacles they have faced and, where appropriate, the adjustments that have been introduced at the domestic level to the definition proposed at the international level.

There will be a 15-minute screening of the film 'Amazonia, the Heart of Mother Earth', followed by a discussion on the issue of the demarcation of indigenous territories in the Amazon and the creation of the international crime of ecocide as two important tools to protect indigenous peoples and their territories. In addition, how both tools affect uncontacted and isolated indigenous peoples, who occupy about 18% of the Amazon and are extremely vulnerable, will be discussed.

Both Laudato Si' and Al-Mizan: A Covenant for the Earth establish a comprehensive framework for ecological and moral responsibility, urging collective action for the protection of our planet and offering ideas and pledges for resolving the triple planetary crisis and, especially, the destruction of nature. A dialogue between the two faiths about profound shared values has the potential to shift global consciousness and foster a powerful protection for the Earth. Ecocide Law would provide the necessary legal support for the task of transforming humanity's relationship with nature from harm to harmony.

The event will discuss the increasing demand for raw minerals needed for the energy transition and the urgent need to protect critical ecosystems. It will also explore how ecocide law could be useful in this context to create a legal guardrail for safe practice.

A growing number of states are actively engaging in discussions and the adoption of criminal laws aimed at protecting nature from the most severe harms. These legislative measures are being considered in response to the increasing recognition of the urgent need to safeguard the environment. Such laws are seen as essential in preventing ecological degradation and ensuring the health and sustainability of natural ecosystems. Non-state actors, including businesses, non-governmental organizations, and community groups, have a crucial role to play in this process. By driving and supporting this 'guardrail' legal framework, they can help facilitate a transition that is both safe and just.

The legal framework for the protection of nature in Colombia will be discussed following the Peace Agreements, in particular the ecocide in Article 333 of the Penal Code, has been wrongly used to persecute small farmers, distorting the spirit and meaning of the crime of ecocide at an international level. The event is related to goals 1, 7, 11, 15 and 22 of the Kunming-Montreal Framework.

Industrial and energy related transitions in response to climate change require exponential amounts of critical raw materials. Quality deposits and potential resources are found in critical marine and terrestrial ecosystems, biodiversity hotspots, indigenous territories and climate vulnerable areas. This implies that climate targets partially conflict with biodiversity and nature-based targets.

The EU passed a new environmental criminal law just before Easter - among other things, it recognises the destruction of nature "comparable to ecocide" as a particularly serious crime. Germany is the ONLY country that did not vote in favour. Environmental crimes generate revenues of more than €200 billion per year - with serious consequences for human health and nature. Can criminal law protect the environment? And if so, how? An online event organised by Green Legal Impact Germany e.V. and Stop Ecocide provides information and discusses the significance of the new EU environmental criminal law.

The "Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean", better known as the Escazú Agreement, was adopted in Escazú, Costa Rica, on March 4 of 2018. It is an international legal instrument that aims not only to protect the environment, but also human rights. The objective of this international treaty is to guarantee the rights of access to environmental information, public participation in environmental decision-making processes and access to justice in environmental matters, as well as to contribute to the protection of the right to live in an environment with healthy and sustainable development.

Global warming and the massive destruction of ecosystems is leading us into an environmental crisis unprecedented in human history, threatening our future as a human species as well as that of thousands of other species with which we share our planet. To a large extent, this crisis is rooted in the mistaken belief that humanity can survive on its own and independently of nature.

Healthy ecosystems and flourishing biodiversity are fundamental to the harmonious balance of life on Earth, as well as to sustainable human civilisation. They are also fundamental to regulating climate. The world is facing an ecological crisis. Human activities have caused extensive damage to the environment, leading to climate change, biodiversity loss, and other forms of environmental degradation. For years, the science has been clear; to protect the planet we must halt our greenhouse gas emissions, stop the mass destruction of ecosystems, and redefine a more respectful, loving relationship with our planet. And yet the urgency and solutions needed to address the ongoing biodiversity and climate crises are nowhere in sight. World leaders are failing to act. Many young people are growing frustrated about this inaction and anxious about the lack of accountability when our decision-makers refuse to implement necessary, systemic changes.

In the run-up to Earth Day, one of Youth for Ecocide Law's core mobilisers, Laila Martins, is hosting a climate sharing circle. It will be a space to vent, share difficult emotions, and support one another as we organize major Earth Day actions and events. The Climate Circle provides a virtual space for open-sharing for people studying environmental topics, climate activists and/or people legitimately worried about climate change and environmental degradation.

The farming community and landworkers are on the front line in the effort to conserve the natural world and see at first hand the damage being done. Whilst dominant food production and resources extraction models often cause severe harm to the Earth, outsourcing the true costs to nature, a growing number of farmers, foresters, growers and land-based workers are taking it upon themselves to be part of the solution, adopting regenerative methods that work with nature rather than against it. A new international crime of ecocide will support this growing trend by creating personal, criminal liability for those individuals responsible for the worst, most damaging behaviours. This webinar will examine how this new crime can strengthen existing environmental laws and safeguards, help create a level playing field for our food producers and preserve the soil and land for future generations.

The future of the Amazon and its Indigenous peoples is more threaten than ever. Even though the election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has brought hope, the challenges remain enormous in a deeply polarized country. But it's not all up to Brazil. The fate of the Amazon rainforest is a concern for the entire world and will require support from global citizens if we want to stop the catastrophic loss of biodiversity. The new administration has pledge to urgently demarcate and protect all indigenous territories. This will only be achieved if Western countries cooperate and if Ecocide is recognize as an international crime.

While some businesses are setting an example in the transition towards sustainable and regenerative practices, it is difficult for true collective change to be implemented while finance continues to flow to projects that severely threaten the natural living world, as governments and regulatory authorities are failing to keep pace with delivering meaningful protection of vital ecosystems. As a result, many companies are increasingly recognising their responsibility extends beyond the bottom line, and are calling for voluntary action to be upgraded into specific laws and standards.

Despite pledges and commitments, it is proving an uphill struggle to reach global biodiversity targets and to genuinely protect the planet's vital ecosystems and keystone species. Meanwhile indigenous and local communities who steward the Earth's most biodiverse regions and stand up to protect the living world are frequently persecuted. Recognizing "ecocide" - severe and either widespread or long-term harm to nature - as a crime at the international level could provide a protective and preventive legal guardrail that is currently missing.

Since ancient times, human beings have sat in a circle to create the community bond and weave words. On this occasion, we will come together to share the experiences and visions of native peoples around ecocide -that is, the most serious damage to nature - and discuss how having an international ecocide law can serve as a barrier to prevent and criminalise the destruction of natural habitats and the beings that inhabit them. Thus, from the ancestral wisdom of their interventions, we will be able to listen to their cosmovisions and their understanding of the profound relationship of the human being with every element and being that is part of Mother Earth.

The Earth calls and invites us to open our ears and our hearts to listen to the voices that emerge from the beings that belong to it, from the depths of the jungles and forests, the mountains, rivers and seas. These voices come to us through the ancestral guardians of these territories, busting with biodiversity, who, from their experiences and struggles, will share with us what they are living through and what the sacred custody of the territory they inhabit really means. In this panel we will join these voices to discuss a legal tool that we consider necessary for the protection and care of Nature, ancestral territories and biodiversity: the inclusion of the crime of ecocide in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, so that those who cause the most serious damage to ecosystems are placed at the same ethical and legal level as those who commit the worst crimes worldwide.

We've known about the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis for almost 40 years, but it took thousands of youth striking and walking out of schools to push this crisis into the public view. Youth have been the driving force behind climate action for the past few years. This discussion with young land defenders and climate activists not only aims to discover why, but what is next?

At this time of environmental and human crisis, recognizing that Nature - Mother Earth - is a living being made up of numerous ecosystems and with rights is essential to stop the devastation and exploitation to which she is being subjected. The inclusion of these rights - both at constitutional level and in national and international laws, agreements and pacts - opens up egal pathways to create alternatives to the ongoing danger of biodiversity loss and climate change, through binding processes in different sections of society, triggering a paradigm shift from anthropocentrism to eco-centrism.

Pledges, agreements and targets have so far failed to prevent mass damage and destruction of nature and the rapid progress of extinction. Perhaps we are missing a key enabling condition in order to fundamentally change attitudes and behaviour? An international crime of ecocide could set an "outer boundary" guardrail to deter and prevent the worst harms, while redirecting funds and policy in a healthier direction and accelerating positive innovation; it would also provide a protective complement to rights of nature as well as the recently acknowledged human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

The Rome Statute is intended to address the "most serious crimes of concern to the international community as a whole", those acts which most "threaten the peace, security and wellbeing of the world". Mass damage and destruction of vital ecosystems through human activity now constitutes precisely such a threat on a global scale. Such damage and destruction, now increasingly referred to as "ecocide", not only has direct and devastating consequences for communities and nations now, but also the severest of implications for the future of human civilisation as a whole, as well as for the wider community of species with whom we share our planetary home.

Environmental crimes are the third largest crime sector in the world, yet no international law currently exists to criminalise the serious destruction of the environment. How can we prevent conservative forces from blocking the inclusion of ecocide in the EU Environmental Crime Directive? What needs to happen for ecocide to be included in EU environmental criminal law and in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court?

The implementation of ambitious goals and targets in response to the interlinked crises of climate, pollution and biodiversity loss is proving painfully slow and difficult, despite increasingly stark and urgent warnings. We are witnessing around the globe a rising frustration at all levels of society as irreversible tipping points are being crossed, and vulnerable countries and communities continue to disproportionately suffer. An international criminal law framework to deter and prevent severe and widespread or long-term destruction of ecosystems - now increasingly known as "ecocide" - could provide a sorely needed guardrail and guidance system to catalyse strategic change across industry and policy.

An international conference on ecocide will be held for the first time in Türkiye, at the Gazhane Museum in Istanbul on 3-4 November 2022, in cooperation with the Climate Justice Coalition – Ecocide Working Group, UCTEA Chamber of Environmental Engineers and EndEcocide Türkiye. The aim is to discuss the recognition of ecocide as a crime in Turkish domestic law, to review current lawsuits and nature advocacy activities, and the scope and targets of struggles that have already begun, thus building bridges between the climate justice and ecocide movements in the world and in Türkiye.

In this lecture, Professor Sir Jonathan Bate will trace the history of the idea of "the rights of nature" back to the revolutionary period of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and Professor Philippe Sands QC will explain the work of the international panel of legal experts, which he co-chaired, to develop a legal definition of ecocide.

In this webinar, guest speakers from Hawaii, New Zealand (and other communities, to be confirmed) will share updates about the threats faced by their communities, and the actions being taken by stop ecocide advocates and others.

The briefing will cover: the ecocide definition, the International Criminal Court (ICC) route, incredible global developments, nations that are already leading in this conversation, and how to get Norway on board with supporting the effort. This will be an in person deep dive opportunity to learn more about the ecocide campaign, to appreciate the legal definition, and to discuss some real world context and how we can build the conversation in Norway.

Around the world, lawyers and environmentalists are advocating for the law of ecocide to be recognised in international law. There are various definitions of 'Ecocide' - a simple definition is that ecocide is "large scale damage and destruction of ecosystems causing severe harm to nature which is widespread or long term'. In Australia, a group of lawyers, academic researchers and law students have created 'Ecocide Laws Australia', a working group auspiced by the Australian Earth Laws Alliance (AELA), which is exploring how ecocide laws might be created and implemented in Australia.

We are dependent on healthy marine and coastal ecosystems for billions of livelihoods around the world, as well as regulation of weather and climate. When the oceans lose their regenerative capacity, we face profound, even existential crisis. Meanwhile existing laws are proving inadequate to deter and protect from the destructive side effects of many industrial practices and exploratory extractive projects. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Here in Stockholm exactly 50 years ago, Swedish leader Olof Palme argued for an international law against ecocide to end impunity for large-scale environmental destruction. Today, we honour his legacy by focusing on the rapid global progress of exactly this initiative: recognition of a new international crime of ecocide. Recent IPCC reports show how the crises of climate and biodiversity have deepened despite global efforts. Perhaps this should not be surprising, in the absence of a binding legal framework to prevent old destructive and often colonial practices ("business as usual") from continuing - practices that threaten not only the environment and communities but peace and security as well.

The purpose of this webinar series, co-hosted by RAVENTrust and Stop Ecocide Canada, is to educate and raise awareness on using international law, and specifically a crime of ecocide, to uphold Indigenous rights and environmental protection. In this third discussion, we will hear stories from the frontlines, centered on environmental racism, the ongoing impacts of colonisation and it connects with ecocide, the mass destruction of nature.

Mass environmental devastation affects us all, even if the damage is inflicted within national borders. Yet as it stands today international law is inadequate to address extreme, willful damage to the environment. On Thursday, January 20, 2022, at noon (New York time), "Ecocide: A Discussion of Law and Ethics" will assemble international lawyers and scholars to discuss the Panel's efforts to define ecocide as well as to examine the significance of shifting to an eco-centric framework.

The Steering Group for Architects Declare has developed a Strategy for Change which describes how we want to transform the built environment by 2030 so that it is planned, constructed and operated within planetary boundaries, delivering positive social impacts for all. Join Stop Ecocide co-founder Jojo Mehta and leading experts to learn about emerging global movements to create ecocentric laws, with a focus on including "ecocide" as a crime in the Rome Statute and passing laws against ecocide across the globe. Stop Ecocide Co-Founder & Director Jojo Mehta is speaking at Hawkwood's Climate Action lab on Wednesday 4th March at 11am. This 2-day action lab will create the space for us to re-imagine the ways in which we can limit our impact on our planetary resources in the decade ahead. We will draw from the experience from the thought-leaders and special guests that have been invited with the purpose that their experience might re-ignite the power of our imagination, and give us the ground we need to finally get practical about climate change.

A workshop intended to explore the reality of Ecocide in various regions of the world, the requirements for amending the Rome Statute to include Ecocide Crime, and the nature of alliances that could help move this amendment forward. There will be expert facilitation throughout the workshop to enable full involvement of all participants, so that the outcomes from the day include strong strategies for ongoing alliance-building and positive commitments towards addressing the missing crime of Ecocide.

From Harm to Harmony - Addressing Ecocide in three short films. This evening is an exceptional opportunity to gain an empathic insight into those communities already suffering ECOCIDE and to understand the potential of a simple legal solution with the power to reconnect humanity to the greater web of life, protecting future generations of all species including our own.

This side event will explore the 2016 Office of the Prosecutor's Policy Paper on Case Selection and Prioritisation to uncover current and future opportunities for the ICC to address the current climate crisis, global heating and incessant environmental issues worldwide, including the potential of introducing a fifth atrocity crime: Ecocide.

Environmental activism has taken on new forms recently with mass campaigns of civil disobedience and school strikes. These have helped push climate change to the top of the policy agenda, with amongst other things, declarations of climate emergency being made in cities and countries around the world. Activism can take other forms too, such as that of indigenous people struggling to protect their land, campaigning for new criminal laws or within the legal profession.

The EARTHtalks are an event founded in Vienna and have taken place annually since 2008. Bringing together NGOs, business, public institutions and interested members of the public, the EARTHtalks engages them in dialogue with extraordinary speakers and – most importantly – with each other.

The Cry of an Ecoactivist Talk Eco-Education Tour UK Ivan Anjo Diniz Brazilian educator IVAN ANJO DINIZ is coming to Stroud as part of his UK Educational Eco Tour. Ivan is based in the Cerrado area of the Amazon, an area of astounding biodiversity and ecological richness. Not surprisingly his life is dedicated to the increasingly difficult and dangerous task of protecting this land.

On 9th October the beautiful South Cubbington Woods are due to be destroyed to make way for HS2 – just in case the project gets the go ahead in December. Up and down the planned HS2 route a total of 108 woods are due to be partly or wholly destroyed, over 30 of which are classified ancient woodlands, which will take over 100 years to recreate.

21st Sept is International Peace Day; Jozette, a member of the Stop Ecocide core team, has been organising peace events for the last several years around this, and in 2017 Polly and Jojo launched Mission Life force (which has become Stop Ecocide) at the 2017 event. This year, Roslyn Cook, who has been instrumental in getting 126 countries to sign a treaty outlawing nuclear weapons, and who Polly mentored, is coming to speak about her work.

Stop ecocide will have a stand and Anita Van Rossum is speaking at 11.30 on the urgent importance of ecocide becoming a crime and the Earth Protector Town initiative. A free event organized by Glastonbury Town Council, Somerset Waste, Local community food growers, Extinction Rebellion, Plastic Free Glastonbury, Friends of the Earth & Earth Protectors, will have stalls with information & advice on sourcing local food produce & growing your own; switching to renewable energy; how to reduce consumption, reducing plastic use; including recycling, composting & gardening for wildlife.
